Manipur DGP Rubbishes Allegations Regarding Removal of Kuki Officers from Duty

IMPHAL: The Director General of Police for Manipur, P Doungel has said that the allegations made by the 10 members of the tribal communities of the state regarding police officials of the Kuki community were all fake and baseless and that no such action has been taken by the police administration.

The police chief of the state mentioned that it came to notice that news was being circulated saying that the elected representatives have submitted a memorandum to the Union Home Minister citing that all Kuki police officials in the state at all levels were stripped of their powers, disarmed and rendered inactive for duty much before May 3. This was the day when ethnic violence broke out across the state of Manipur, leading to the deployment of armed forces in the state.

“As it was premeditated, all Kuki police officers from the DG/Addl DG,jt DG down to the constables were stripped of all powers, disarmed and rendered inactive much prior to the 3rd May, while Meitei police were let loose upon Kuki residents of the city as well as of the foothill villages on the 3rd of May and thereafter. As a result of the backlash in the hill areas, all Meitei police staff have abandoned their posts in all hill stations,” stated the MLAs in their memorandum to Amit Shah.

In his statement, P Doungel clarified that “there is no such action taken by the government or from any quarter.” He also mentioned that all members of the police force irrespective of their ethnic background, discharged their responsibilities as assigned as per rule.

These ten elected members of the House have been demanding a separate administration for the tribal population of the state as it was no longer safe for the communities to stay there after the violence.
